The President of the Republic, Paul Kagame, on Monday arrived in Doha, Qatar, where he participated in the Qatar Economic Forum, held for the 3rd time.
H.E Paul Kagame said that Rwanda has never asked Britain to send migrants in order to benefit from them. He continued to say that they are doing this for help, and that there are other countries that want this cooperation.
This came after the European court rejected the British request to send migrants to Rwanda because it is against human rights.
Since the beginning of this year, the UK has received nearly seven thousand migrants, who entered the country through the La Marche channel in small boats from France. The number of people who crossed in the last year of 2022, exceeded 45 thousand. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak continued to promise to stop these boats.
In the last year of 2022, the UK made an agreement with the government of Rwanda, which will allow an unknown number of immigrants to be sent to Rwanda, so that their files will be examined there. That is about asylum and settlement, and they have no right of appeal.
Regarding this agreement, the UK has already paid Rwanda 150 million US dollars. The British Prime Minister said: “It is new, it will achieve the goal, but I also believe that it is in line with our international responsibilities.”
The judges at the European Court of Human Rights rejected this. When the first flight was scheduled to go to Rwanda in June last year, the court issued what is known as order number 39, which prohibits the flights because they seem to violate the European Convention on Human Rights, which the UK signed.
The Council of Europe is not part of the European Union. In this regard, the British government has prepared a new law, which will invalidate the decisions made by the European Court. Its project is currently being debated in the parliament.
In a meeting with the European Council this week, Minister Rishi Sunak said that he will try to convince the European partners to reform the court. “We want to make the European Court always fair, efficient and transparent.” He said
Some analysts say that Europe is not in a good mood to negotiate with Britain, after Britain left the European Union.
Miss Camino Mortera-Martinez is a researcher at the Center for Change in Europe. She said, “I am not sure that they will take a step that they will enter into the reforms of another European institution, that they will please Mr. Sunak and his government regarding the immigration program.”
Some members of Sunak’s conservative party, they want that British exit from the European Council and withdraw from its human rights treaties. About ¼ of the migrants who arrived in small boats in 2022 were Lebanese. England repatriated about 1,000.
